Socks, the unsung and sometimes forgotten hero of a sharp look. They are probably one of the best simple style adds to an outfit that easily adds color, print or texture. They can be the punctuation on a theme or make the viewer wonder what’s going on here? Is wrong sock theory a thing?
Socks are also in their truest form a protective layer. I recently bought some transitional leather mules the insides of which are a bit raw and rub the top of my toes. A light weight sock comes in handy here but it can’t just be any ol’ sock! They need to accentuate my new mules or purposely form a break between clothing and shoe.
In some instances they can turn a shoe into something that it’s not. After spending my developmental years playing soccer and riding horse my calves are outside accessible tall boot range. Socks can elongate a shoe and in my case draw focus to said shoe and not my calves. Maybe this is why I’m not an OS dress girl?
Though rarely seen as a pattern in the sewing world (unending amount of options in the knitting realm) socks are satisfyingly fast sews that can be on Pinterest one moment and your feet the next (providing you have the fabric on hand).
There is also an endless amount of personalization possibilities with socks. You can give them lettuce edges, add bows, pom poms, contrast stitching…i could keep going! Monogramming?!
Fabric choices give socks different personalities. If you’re in warmer weather you can cut them in a breezy mesh or cotton, very Ralph. If it’s the cooler months try a fleece or waffle with extra length for scrunching ala Brother Vellies Cloud Sock (highly recommend).
Stretch is best, 4 way in particular, but you can also do 2-way (cutting the stretch in the length) or even some fabrics with give will work but may not have the retention as something with elastane.

They may be the last thing on your mind right now (apologies to anyone currently in an area where temperatures are holding strong above 100* and just the idea of encasing your feet triggers heat rage) but seasons will change so here it is!
