Loose Leaf : The DUCK Flower Bag
the chic way to schlepp your blooms like the aesthetically driven person you are
It’s official, we are doing flowers this season; from now into eternity after the addition of our newest subscriber pattern, the Duck Flower Bag; a garden inspired accessory to level up your farmers market schlepping. This bag is an alluring yet convenient way to transport any intentionally gathered assortment.
Using just a little over half a yard/meter of fabric; the possibilities for variation are endless; trade out the strap dimensions, swap the cinch strap for a drawstring and cord lock, etc. It’s a perfect handmade addition for any spring birthday friends, Mother’s Day or a sweet gift to yourself with a promise of a new bouquet every so often. It also doubles as a baguette sling, if you’re doing a bread/bouquet double feature. Use it to gather pre-season hardy greens or herbs from your local CSA or prepare for summer swimming escapades when you’ll need a towel and umbrella sling to tote your lakeside wears….
Oilskin Cloth vs Waxed Cotton, same but different.
Of course you don’t have to go the more technical route, but I highly recommend making this bag out of a fabric with some sort of water resistance like an oilskin cloth or waxed cotton.
What’s that saying about eyebrows? They should be sisters, not twins? These two are a fabric representation of this trope. Both are used to keep things dry and warm but with different visual qualities and durability.
Oilskin Cloth is made by soaking the base fabric, typically a cotton canvas, in oil and paraffins. It tends to have a rougher texture but is the more durable of the two.
Waxed Cotton is made by applying wax to the base fabric with heat and pressure. The outcome is a smoother, glossier finish that creates a barrier against moisture.
Over time both break down with wear and tear and new oil or wax will need to be applied. Of the two, waxed cotton is easier to maintain when the time comes to refresh the fabric. Both fabrics will last decades with proper care.
